Ophthalmology is a medical and surgical specialty that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of eye problems. A physician who specializes in ophthalmology is known as an ophthalmologist. Academic research on the diagnosis and treatment of eye problems is available to ophthalmologists. Combining methods and therapies to address diverse pathologic processes has become commonplace in many, if not all, medical specialties. Gene therapy is a prominent topic in ophthalmic research because it has the potential to be a one-time transformative therapy for patients with wet AMD who have unmet medical requirements.
