Scleritis

Scleritis

Scleritis is a condition marked by inflammation of the sclera, the tough outer layer of the eye. It causes intense eye pain, redness, and sometimes vision disturbances. The inflammation can manifest in different forms—such as anterior, posterior, or necrotizing—each varying in severity and location on the sclera. Often linked to systemic diseases like rheumatoid arthritis or lupus, scleritis necessitates a comprehensive eye examination for diagnosis, potentially supplemented by imaging or blood tests to uncover underlying causes. Treatment focuses on alleviating inflammation and managing symptoms with medications like NSAIDs, corticosteroids, or immunosuppressants. Severe cases may demand hospitalization for intensive therapy to mitigate vision loss risks and complications. Effective long-term management involves controlling the underlying condition to prevent recurrence. Early detection and swift intervention are vital for preserving eye health in scleritis cases.
