Autoimmune Ocular Disease and Allergy

Autoimmune ocular diseases, such as uveitis and scleritis, occur when the immune system erroneously targets eye tissues, resulting in inflammation and potential vision impairment. These conditions often accompany systemic autoimmune disorders like rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. In contrast, allergic eye diseases, such as allergic conjunctivitis, are triggered by an overreaction of the immune system to allergens like pollen or pet dander, leading to symptoms like itching, redness, and tearing. While both autoimmune and allergic ocular conditions involve inflammatory processes, their triggers and immune responses differ. Effective management requires identifying the cause, utilizing anti-inflammatory medications, and avoiding allergens. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are essential for preserving vision and enhancing quality of life.
