Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) is a potentially blinding eye disorder that primarily affects premature infants, especially those born before 31 weeks of gestation or weighing less than 1500 grams. It occurs when the blood vessels in the retina, the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye, develop abnormally due to the immature development of the retina in premature babies. The main risk factors for ROP include low birth weight, premature birth, fluctuations in oxygen levels, and exposure to high levels of oxygen therapy. The condition can range from mild, where the abnormal vessels regress naturally, to severe, where they progress and cause retinal detachment, leading to vision impairment or blindness if untreated. Regular screening by an ophthalmologist is crucial for early detection and timely intervention. Treatment options vary depending on the severity and stage of ROP, ranging from monitoring for spontaneous regression to laser therapy or injections to prevent retinal detachment and preserve vision. Early identification and management are key to minimizing vision loss in affected infants.
