Keratoconus is a progressive eye disorder characterized by the cornea thinning and gradually adopting a cone shape. This condition distorts vision, leading to symptoms like blurry vision, nearsightedness, astigmatism, and increased light sensitivity. Typically appearing in the late teens or early twenties, its exact cause remains unclear but is thought to involve genetic factors, environmental influences, and abnormalities in corneal collagen.
Managing keratoconus varies depending on its stage. Initially, vision correction may be achieved with glasses or soft contact lenses. As the condition advances, rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses are often used to provide a smoother corneal surface for clearer vision. In severe cases, treatments like corneal cross-linking, implantable lenses, or corneal transplantation may be necessary to stabilize vision and prevent further progression. Early detection through regular eye exams is crucial for effective management of keratoconus.
