Collagen cross-linking (CXL) is a pivotal treatment in ophthalmology designed primarily for managing keratoconus, a condition where the cornea progressively thins and assumes a cone-like shape. This procedure involves applying riboflavin (vitamin B2) eye drops to the cornea, followed by exposure to ultraviolet A (UVA) light. This combination induces cross-links between collagen fibers within the cornea, bolstering its structural integrity and resilience.

The objective of CXL is to arrest the advancement of keratoconus by preventing further corneal bulging and preserving visual clarity. By fortifying the corneal tissue, CXL can potentially reduce reliance on rigid contact lenses and avert the necessity for more invasive treatments such as corneal transplants in severe cases. Successful outcomes hinge on meticulous patient selection and adherence to post-operative protocols to enhance effectiveness and mitigate risks associated with the procedure.
