Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) stands as a prevalent cause of vision decline in individuals aged 50 and above. This condition specifically targets the macula, a crucial part of the retina essential for sharp, central vision. AMD manifests in two primary forms: dry AMD, characterized by a gradual deterioration of light-sensitive cells, and wet AMD, distinguished by abnormal blood vessel growth leading to swift vision impairment.

Various factors contribute to its development, including age, genetics, smoking, and dietary habits. Symptoms typically involve central vision distortion, color perception difficulties, and the appearance of wavy lines. While a cure remains elusive, treatments like anti-VEGF injections for wet AMD and lifestyle adjustments can help manage its progression. Consistent eye examinations play a pivotal role in early detection and effective management, highlighting the significance of proactive eye health practices as individuals age.
