The Retinal Pigment Epithelium (RPE) is a critical layer of cells located at the back of the eye, between the neurosensory retina and the choroid. It plays several crucial roles in maintaining retinal health and function. Primarily, the RPE provides structural support to the retina, helping to maintain its shape and integrity. It also acts as a selective barrier, regulating the transport of nutrients, ions, and waste products between the retina and the blood vessels of the choroid. Another vital function of the RPE is its role in the visual cycle. It helps in the recycling of visual pigments, such as rhodopsin, which is essential for the sensitivity of photoreceptor cells to light. Furthermore, the RPE absorbs excess light that enters the eye, thus preventing light scatter and maintaining visual acuity. Damage or dysfunction of the RPE can lead to various eye conditions, including age-related macular degeneration (AMD), where RPE cells deteriorate, impacting central vision. Studying the RPE is crucial for understanding and treating such disorders effectively.
