Photoreceptors

Photoreceptors are pivotal cells found in the retina, crucial for translating light into electrical signals that the brain interprets as vision. There are two primary types: rods and cones. Rods excel in low-light conditions, aiding night vision but lacking color sensitivity. Cones, predominantly in the central retina (macula), specialize in detecting colors and work best in bright light, especially in the fovea centralis, which supports sharp central vision.

These photoreceptors play a fundamental role in visual perception. Dysfunction or damage to them can lead to various vision impairments such as night blindness, color blindness, or reduced visual acuity. Understanding the distinct functions of rods and cones is essential in diagnosing and treating a wide array of ophthalmic conditions that affect vision quality and clarity.
