Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) encompasses a set of genetic disorders that gradually impair vision by affecting the retina's photoreceptor cells. Specifically targeting the rod photoreceptors crucial for low-light vision, RP initially manifests as night blindness and progresses to tunnel vision—a narrowing of the visual field—ultimately leading to varying degrees of visual impairment or blindness.
Inherited through autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive, or X-linked recessive patterns, RP's onset and progression vary widely, typically appearing in childhood or adolescence. Despite lacking a cure, ongoing research focuses on potential therapies to slow or halt disease progression. Current management strategies include visual aids, occupational therapy, and genetic counseling to support affected individuals and their families.
