Potentially Blinding Eye Illnesses

Potentially Blinding Eye Illnesses

Several eye conditions pose a significant risk of blindness if left untreated. Glaucoma, characterized by increased intraocular pressure damaging the optic nerve, and diabetic retinopathy, which affects those with diabetes through retinal blood vessel damage, are among them. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) leads to central vision loss, while retinal detachment requires urgent surgery to prevent permanent vision loss.

Regular eye exams are crucial for early detection. Symptoms like sudden vision changes, floaters, flashes of light, or peripheral vision loss should not be ignored. Timely medical intervention, including medications, laser therapy, or surgery, can slow or halt progression and preserve vision. Awareness and proactive management are vital for protecting eye health and preventing irreversible blindness.
