Iridocyclitis, also referred to as anterior uveitis, involves inflammation of the iris and the ciliary body. It manifests with symptoms such as eye redness, pain, light sensitivity, and blurred vision. Causes include infections (bacterial, viral, fungal), autoimmune disorders like rheumatoid arthritis, eye trauma, or may be idiopathic. Diagnosis requires a thorough eye examination, often employing slit-lamp biomicroscopy to assess the anterior chamber.
Treatment focuses on reducing inflammation and alleviating symptoms. This typically involves topical corticosteroid eye drops to reduce inflammation, pupil dilators to prevent adhesions, and management of underlying conditions if identified. Vigilant monitoring is essential to prevent complications such as glaucoma or cataracts arising from prolonged inflammation.
