Immunomodulatory Therapy

Immunomodulatory Therapy

Immunomodulatory Therapy (IMT) is essential in ophthalmology for treating autoimmune and inflammatory eye diseases such as uveitis, scleritis, and ocular cicatricial pemphigoid. IMT works by adjusting the immune system to lessen inflammation and prevent eye tissue damage, which is crucial for maintaining vision. The therapy often involves the use of corticosteroids, antimetabolites, T-cell inhibitors, and biologics. These treatments aim to induce long-term remission and reduce dependency on corticosteroids, thereby mitigating risks of steroid-related complications like glaucoma and cataracts. Tailored treatment plans based on the severity of the condition and individual patient needs are vital for achieving optimal results and improving the quality of life for those with chronic ocular inflammatory disorders.
