During ERG, electrodes are placed on the cornea or skin near the eye to measure the electrical responses generated by light stimulation of the retina. The test provides valuable information about various retinal conditions, such as inherited retinal disorders (e.g., retinitis pigmentosa), inflammatory diseases (e.g., uveitis), and toxic effects of medications on the retina. ERG helps differentiate between different types of retinal diseases and can monitor disease progression. It is particularly useful in cases where visual acuity testing or clinical examination alone may not provide sufficient diagnostic information.
