Visual Evoked Potentials (VEP) are neurophysiological tests used in ophthalmology to assess the function of the visual pathways from the retina to the occipital cortex of the brain. By measuring electrical responses generated in the brain in response to visual stimuli, VEPs provide valuable information about the integrity and functioning of the optic nerve and visual pathways.
In clinical practice, VEPs are particularly useful in diagnosing and monitoring conditions affecting the visual system, such as optic neuritis, multiple sclerosis, glaucoma, and various neurological disorders. The test involves presenting visual stimuli to one or both eyes while electrodes placed on the scalp detect and record the brain's electrical activity in response to these stimuli. VEPs are non-invasive and can be performed in both adults and children, making them a versatile tool in the evaluation of visual function and neurological health in ophthalmology practice.
