Chorioretinitis is characterized by inflammation affecting both the choroid (a vascular layer) and the retina (a light-sensitive layer) of the eye. It can result from various infectious agents such as viruses (e.g., cytomegalovirus), bacteria (e.g., toxoplasmosis), fungi (e.g., histoplasmosis), or parasites (e.g., toxocariasis), as well as non-infectious causes like autoimmune diseases such as sarcoidosis. Typical symptoms of chorioretinitis include blurred vision, floaters, and occasionally, loss of peripheral vision. Diagnosis involves a comprehensive eye examination, often incorporating imaging techniques like optical coherence tomography (OCT) and fluorescein angiography to evaluate the extent of inflammation and its impact on retinal structures. Treatment strategies vary depending on the underlying cause and severity but typically include antiviral, antibiotic, or antiparasitic medications, along with corticosteroids to alleviate inflammation. In some instances, laser therapy may be necessary to mitigate complications such as retinal detachment. Timely diagnosis and intervention are critical in managing chorioretinitis effectively and minimizing the risk of permanent vision impairment.
