While initial infection typically affects the lungs, the fungus can spread via the bloodstream to the eyes. In ocular histoplasmosis, spores settle in the retina, triggering inflammation and scarring that may impair vision if untreated.
Common symptoms include blurred vision, blind spots, and visual distortions. Diagnosis involves a thorough eye examination, often supplemented by imaging tests such as fluorescein angiography to identify distinctive patterns of retinal damage. Treatment primarily addresses symptoms and associated complications, as no specific antifungal therapy targets ocular histoplasmosis directly. Prevention entails avoiding high-risk environments and using protective measures in endemic regions like the Ohio and Mississippi River valleys in the United States.
