Cataracts

Cataracts

Cataracts occur when the lens inside the eye becomes cloudy, leading to gradual or rapid deterioration of vision. This common condition, particularly prevalent among older adults, manifests as blurred vision, faded colors, increased sensitivity to glare, and occasional double vision in one eye. Factors such as aging, diabetes, UV exposure, smoking, and certain medications contribute to its development.

Treatment primarily involves surgical removal of the affected lens followed by its replacement with an artificial lens. This procedure, known as phacoemulsification, is safe and efficient, often conducted as outpatient surgery with minimal recovery time. Prevention strategies include wearing UV-protective sunglasses, smoking cessation, managing diabetes effectively, and undergoing regular eye examinations. Timely diagnosis and intervention are crucial for preserving visual acuity and enhancing overall quality of life.
