Cataract

Cataract

Cataracts are a common condition where the eye's natural lens becomes cloudy, typically due to aging but also from factors like injury or medical conditions such as diabetes. This cloudiness obstructs the passage of light through the lens, causing symptoms like blurred vision, sensitivity to glare, and difficulty seeing at night. The primary treatment for cataracts involves a surgical procedure called phacoemulsification. This minimally invasive surgery removes the cloudy lens and replaces it with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). It's performed under local anesthesia and effectively restores clear vision while often correcting other vision issues. Regular eye exams are essential to monitor the progression of cataracts. Early symptoms may be managed with corrective lenses or adjustments in lighting, but as cataracts worsen, surgery becomes necessary to maintain good vision and overall eye health.
