Zonular Fibers

Zonular fibers, or zonules, are thin strands composed of fibrillin-containing glycoproteins that suspend the lens within the ciliary body of the eye. These fibers are vital for maintaining the lens's position and shape, crucial for proper vision. Functionally, zonular fibers enable accommodation, the eye's ability to focus on objects at different distances by altering the lens's curvature. They achieve this by connecting the lens capsule to the ciliary body, facilitating controlled adjustments in lens shape to refract light onto the retina for clear vision. Disorders such as Marfan syndrome, trauma, or age-related changes can affect zonular fibers, potentially causing lens dislocation. Surgical interventions often involve manipulating these fibers to reposition or stabilize the lens, ensuring optimal visual outcomes. Understanding the structure and function of zonular fibers is essential in diagnosing and managing conditions that impact lens stability and accommodation in ophthalmology.
