The ciliary muscle, nestled behind the iris, plays a pivotal role in ocular physiology by controlling the lens's shape. This intricate smooth muscle, housed within the ciliary body along with its aqueous humor-producing processes, orchestrates the lens's ability to adjust focus—a process known as accommodation. By contracting, the ciliary muscle eases tension on the suspensory ligaments (zonules), allowing the lens to assume a more rounded shape for near vision. Conversely, relaxation of the ciliary muscle increases tension on the zonules, flattening the lens to facilitate clear distance vision. Disorders affecting the ciliary muscle's function, like presbyopia or accommodation issues, disrupt this delicate balance, resulting in visual impairment that can often be corrected with corrective lenses suited to specific visual requirements.
