Visual Field Test

A visual field test is a crucial diagnostic tool in ophthalmology used to assess the full horizontal and vertical range of vision of each eye individually. It measures peripheral vision, which is essential for detecting conditions like glaucoma, optic nerve damage, and neurological disorders affecting vision. During the test, the patient focuses on a central point while responding to lights or other stimuli appearing in their peripheral vision. This data is then plotted to create a map of the visual field, highlighting any areas of reduced sensitivity or blind spots.

The test is non-invasive and typically takes around 15-45 minutes to complete, depending on the complexity and method used (e.g., automated perimetry or manual kinetic testing). Regular visual field tests are crucial for monitoring the progression of diseases affecting the optic nerve and ensuring timely intervention to preserve vision.
