Perimetry

Perimetry

Perimetry is a crucial diagnostic tool in ophthalmology used to assess the visual field of patients. It measures the entire scope of vision, detecting any areas of decreased sensitivity that could indicate conditions affecting the optic nerve, retina, or visual pathways in the brain. There are various methods of perimetry, including automated techniques like Humphrey Field Analyzer (HFA) and Goldmann perimetry, which involve the patient responding to visual stimuli such as lights or moving targets.

Perimetry is indispensable in diagnosing and monitoring diseases like glaucoma, where early detection of peripheral vision loss is vital for timely intervention to prevent further damage. It is also valuable in assessing conditions like optic neuritis, brain tumors affecting the visual pathways, and retinal disorders. The results provide ophthalmologists with detailed maps of visual field defects, aiding in treatment planning and evaluating the progression of eye diseases over time.
