Transpupillary thermotherapy (TTT) is an advanced ophthalmic procedure designed to treat intraocular tumors, notably choroidal melanomas and hemangiomas. This minimally invasive technique utilizes infrared light directed through the pupil to selectively target and destroy tumor cells while sparing healthy surrounding tissue.
A specialized contact lens aids in precisely focusing the infrared light onto the tumor, where it induces coagulation and eliminates abnormal cells by generating localized heat. Unlike conventional radiation therapy, TTT offers the advantage of preserving vision by minimizing collateral damage to nearby eye structures. Typically conducted on an outpatient basis, TTT may necessitate multiple sessions depending on the tumor's size and location. This approach underscores its effectiveness in treating ocular tumors while prioritizing the preservation of visual function and minimizing potential side effects.
