Superior oblique palsy is a condition in ophthalmology characterized by weakness or paralysis of the superior oblique muscle, impairing normal eye movement. This muscle normally aids in downward and outward rotation of the eye. Patients often experience vertical diplopia, particularly exacerbated when looking downward and towards the affected side. Tilting the head away from the affected eye can alleviate symptoms by minimizing eye misalignment.
Various factors can lead to this condition, including trauma, congenital abnormalities, or neurological disorders affecting the eye's nerve supply. Treatment approaches depend on the severity and cause, ranging from observation and prism glasses for double vision correction to surgical procedures aimed at restoring proper muscle function and eye alignment.
