Refractive Lens Exchange

Refractive Lens Exchange

Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) is a surgical solution aimed at correcting refractive errors in vision, especially for individuals over 40 facing challenges like presbyopia or other age-related vision issues. Unlike procedures such as LASIK or PRK that reshape the cornea, RLE involves the replacement of the eye's natural lens with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) to enhance vision. Ideal candidates for RLE typically include those with severe hyperopia or myopia that exceed the corrective limits of LASIK, as well as individuals seeking a multifocal lens option for presbyopia. The procedure resembles cataract surgery, where the clouded natural lens is removed and substituted with an IOL. RLE delivers long-term vision correction benefits, potentially reducing or eliminating the need for glasses or contacts. However, it carries inherent risks like infection, retinal detachment, or elevated intraocular pressure. Prospective RLE candidates are advised to consult with an ophthalmologist to assess suitability, discuss potential outcomes, and understand associated risks.
