This condition typically develops due to prolonged exposure to UV light, dry climates, or environmental irritants like dust. Symptoms include eye irritation, redness, and a sensation of having a foreign object in the eye. Mild cases can be managed with lubricating eye drops, but more severe instances may require surgical intervention to prevent vision impairment. Surgery involves removing the pterygium tissue and possibly grafting tissue from another part of the eye to prevent recurrence. Prevention measures such as wearing sunglasses and using eye protection outdoors are recommended to minimize the risk of developing a pterygium.
