Panretinal photocoagulation (PRP) is a common procedure in ophthalmology used to treat proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) and other conditions causing retinal neovascularization. During PRP, a laser is applied to the peripheral areas of the retina to create hundreds of small burns. This helps reduce abnormal blood vessel growth and prevents them from bleeding or causing retinal detachment, which are severe complications of PDR. The procedure typically takes place over multiple sessions to treat the entire peripheral retina while preserving central vision.
PRP aims to preserve vision and prevent further deterioration in patients with advanced diabetic eye disease. Although it can cause some temporary side effects like blurry vision or reduced night vision, PRP is highly effective in stabilizing the retina and preventing severe vision loss in diabetic patients at risk of blindness. Regular follow-ups are crucial to monitor the retina's response and ensure optimal outcomes.
