Pachymetry is a vital procedure in ophthalmology used to measure the thickness of the cornea, the transparent outer layer of the eye. This measurement is crucial for several reasons. Firstly, it helps in the accurate diagnosis and monitoring of conditions like glaucoma, where thin corneas may indicate a higher risk. Secondly, it plays a critical role in determining the suitability of patients for refractive surgeries such as LASIK, as corneal thickness affects the surgical approach and outcomes.

The procedure involves using an ultrasonic or optical device to measure the distance between the cornea's front and back surfaces. It's a quick and painless process that provides valuable information for ophthalmologists to make informed decisions about patient care. Pachymetry results are typically recorded in micrometers (μm), with average corneal thickness ranging from about 500 to 600 μm. This non-invasive technique has significantly enhanced our understanding and management of various eye conditions, contributing to improved treatment outcomes and patient safety in ophthalmic practice.
