Tonometry is a diagnostic procedure used in ophthalmology to measure the intraocular pressure (IOP) of the eye. This measurement is crucial for assessing the risk of glaucoma, a condition where elevated IOP can lead to optic nerve damage and vision loss if untreated. There are several methods of tonometry, with the most common being the Goldmann applanation tonometry, where a tiny flat-tipped cone gently touches the cornea after numbing drops are applied. This method calculates IOP based on the amount of force required to flatten a small area of the cornea. Other methods include air-puff tonometry, which uses a rapid puff of air to estimate IOP, and handheld tonometers used in settings where more portable equipment is necessary. Accurate measurement of IOP through tonometry is essential for timely diagnosis and management of glaucoma, helping to preserve vision through appropriate treatment and monitoring.
