Optic disc edema, also referred to as papilledema, occurs when the optic nerve head swells due to increased intracranial pressure (ICP). This condition typically affects both eyes and can be caused by various conditions such as intracranial tumors, meningitis, hydrocephalus, or cerebral venous sinus thrombosis. The optic disc appears elevated and blurred, often obscuring its normal central depression known as the physiologic cup. Patients with optic disc edema may experience symptoms like headaches, transient visual obscurations, and nausea. Upon fundoscopic examination, clinicians observe signs such as disc swelling with hyperemia, indistinct disc margins, and sometimes hemorrhages or exudates. Timely evaluation is crucial to determine the underlying cause and prevent potential vision loss, as untreated papilledema can lead to optic nerve damage. Management typically involves addressing the primary condition causing elevated ICP, requiring coordinated care between ophthalmologists and specialists in neurology or neurosurgery for comprehensive treatment.
