Optic disc drusen are abnormal deposits of protein and calcium that accumulate in the optic nerve head. They are typically found bilaterally and can affect both eyes. These deposits are often asymptomatic and benign but can occasionally lead to visual field defects or visual acuity changes due to compression of the optic nerve fibers. Optic disc drusen are usually diagnosed during routine eye exams when the ophthalmologist observes characteristic findings such as elevated, calcified nodules on the optic disc.
Imaging techniques like B-scan ultrasonography or optical coherence tomography (OCT) can confirm the presence of drusen and assess their impact on the optic nerve. Management involves regular monitoring of visual function and optic nerve integrity. While no definitive treatment exists to remove the drusen, periodic evaluations are crucial to detect any progression of visual symptoms or complications.
