The Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) is a type of corrective lens used in ophthalmology to treat refractive errors such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. Unlike traditional contact lenses, ICLs are surgically implanted inside the eye, specifically between the iris and the natural lens, where they remain indefinitely. Made from a biocompatible material called collamer, which contains collagen, ICLs are flexible and lightweight, reducing the risk of discomfort or irritation.
One of the key advantages of ICLs is their ability to provide high-quality vision correction, often achieving clearer and sharper vision compared to glasses or regular contact lenses. They are suitable for patients with moderate to severe refractive errors who may not be ideal candidates for laser eye surgery like LASIK.
