Endothelial Cell Count

Endothelial cell count is a crucial measurement in ophthalmology, particularly in assessing the health of the cornea. These cells, located on the inner surface of the cornea, help maintain its transparency by regulating fluid and solute transport to prevent swelling. A typical healthy cornea has around 2,500 cells per square millimeter, with a slow but natural decline occurring with age.

Measuring endothelial cell density is essential in diagnosing and managing conditions like Fuchs' dystrophy, where cell loss leads to corneal edema and reduced visual acuity. Techniques such as specular microscopy are employed to accurately count these cells. Monitoring endothelial cell counts over time is critical for determining the progression of diseases affecting the cornea and guiding treatment decisions, including the need for interventions like corneal transplantation. Maintaining optimal endothelial cell density ensures corneal clarity and visual function, highlighting its importance in ophthalmic care.
