Fuchs' dystrophy is a progressive eye condition primarily affecting older adults, characterized by the gradual loss of endothelial cells in the cornea. These cells normally maintain the cornea's transparency by regulating its hydration levels. As endothelial cells diminish, the cornea retains excess fluid, leading to swelling, cloudiness, and eventually impaired vision. Typical symptoms include glare, particularly in bright light, and blurred or hazy vision, often more noticeable in the morning and improving throughout the day. While the condition usually affects both eyes, the progression can vary between them. Treatment options range from monitoring in early stages to more advanced interventions like eye drops, special contact lenses, or surgery as vision deteriorates. Regular eye exams are essential for early detection and management of Fuchs' dystrophy, helping to minimize its impact on vision quality over time.
