Dilated Fundus Examination

Dilated Fundus Examination

A Dilated Fundus Examination (DFE) is a critical procedure in ophthalmology used to thoroughly assess the interior of the eye, including the retina, optic disc, macula, and blood vessels. During a DFE, eye drops are administered to dilate (widen) the pupil, providing a more comprehensive view than possible with undilated pupils. This dilation allows ophthalmologists to detect and monitor a range of ocular conditions, such as diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, retinal detachment, and glaucoma. Although the dilation may cause temporary light sensitivity and blurred vision, it is invaluable for early detection and management of potentially sight-threatening diseases. Regular DFE is particularly recommended for individuals with diabetes, hypertension, or a family history of eye disease.
