Pupil Dilation

Pupil Dilation

Pupil dilation is a vital diagnostic technique in ophthalmology, involving the enlargement of the pupil's diameter. This procedure is achieved using eye drops containing medications like tropicamide or phenylephrine. By enlarging the pupil, eye care professionals gain a broader view of the retina, optic nerve head, and other internal eye structures during examinations. This enhanced view aids in detecting conditions such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and retinal detachment.

Additionally, pupil dilation facilitates more accurate assessment of refractive errors and helps determine the correct prescription for corrective lenses. Although dilation temporarily affects near vision and light sensitivity, these effects typically subside within a few hours. While some individuals may experience prolonged dilation, it is generally well-tolerated despite the temporary discomfort. Overall, pupil dilation plays a crucial role in enabling comprehensive eye health evaluations and precise diagnoses in ophthalmic practice.
