In this presentation I would like to summarise the various causes, methods to prevent them and the role of ophthalmologist in the preventionof corneal blindness.
Material and methods: Data of cases of corneal blindness collected from pubmed indexed journal and a list prepared where in the causative factors/age were analysed. A few cases from personal experience as a clinician were also considered.
Results:
The following observations were made
1. Tauma- including chemical burns
2. Infection
3. Steven johnson syndrome
4. Systemic diseases
5. Bells palsy
6. Nutritional deficiency
7.Iatrogenic-cataract surgery complication
8. Congenital
Conculsion: Each segment was analysed and preventive methods if applied and it was conclded that corneal blindness can be prevented in 90 percent of the cases by timely systematic interpretation. Each type of case requires a systematic approach.
