The vitreous humor is a gel-like substance that fills the space between the lens of the eye and the retina. Composed mainly of water, it also contains collagen fibers, hyaluronic acid, and other proteins. Its primary functions include maintaining the shape of the eye, supporting the retina, and aiding in light refraction. As we age, the vitreous humor undergoes changes that can sometimes lead to visual disturbances. One common condition is posterior vitreous detachment (PVD), where the vitreous separates from the retina. This can cause floaters—small, semi-transparent specks or strands—to appear in the visual field. Although usually harmless, PVD can rarely lead to complications such as retinal tears or detachments, necessitating prompt medical attention. Understanding the properties and changes of the vitreous humor is crucial in diagnosing and managing various ophthalmic conditions, contributing significantly to the field of ophthalmology.
