Vitrectomy is a surgical procedure used in ophthalmology to treat various conditions affecting the retina and vitreous humor of the eye. It involves the removal of the vitreous gel that fills the central cavity of the eye (vitreous cavity). This procedure is typically performed to repair retinal detachment, clear vitreous hemorrhage (bleeding into the vitreous), or alleviate traction on the retina caused by scar tissue.
During a vitrectomy, small incisions are made in the eye, through which microscopic instruments and a fiber-optic light source are inserted.
