Thyroid Eye Disease

Thyroid Eye Disease

Thyroid Eye Disease (TED), also termed Graves' Orbitopathy, emerges when the body's immune system erroneously targets the tissues encircling the eyes, provoking inflammation and swelling. It primarily afflicts individuals grappling with hyperthyroidism, notably stemming from Graves' disease. Symptoms encompass protruding eyes, diplopia, ocular dryness, redness, and, in severe instances, potential vision impairment if untreated. Management typically entails regulating thyroid hormone levels, employing lubricating eye drops, and, in critical scenarios, resorting to corticosteroids or surgical interventions to alleviate optic nerve pressure. Timely identification and intervention are paramount to forestall enduring complications like permanent vision loss or facial disfigurement. Ophthalmologists wield significant influence in the comprehensive approach to mitigating thyroid eye disease, striving to mitigate symptoms and safeguard ocular health.
