Tear ducts, also known as lacrimal ducts, play a crucial role in the eye's tear drainage system. Tears produced by the lacrimal glands bathe and protect the surface of the eye, providing essential moisture and nutrients. Excess tears, along with debris and foreign particles, are drained through a network of tiny openings called puncta located at the inner corners of the eyelids. From there, tears travel through narrow canaliculi and into the lacrimal sac. Finally, they are emptied into the nasal cavity through the nasolacrimal duct, which explains why crying often leads to a runny nose. Issues such as blockages or infections in these ducts can lead to excessive tearing or dry eye syndrome, affecting eye comfort and vision. Understanding the anatomy and function of tear ducts is vital in diagnosing and treating various ophthalmic conditions effectively.
