Retinoscopy is a fundamental procedure in optometry and ophthalmology used to determine a patient's eyeglass prescription. It involves shining a light into the patient's eye and observing the reflection (reflex) off the retina. By adjusting lenses in a trial frame while observing the movement and characteristics of this reflex, the examiner can estimate the patient's refractive error, including nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), astigmatism, and presbyopia.
The procedure works on the principle of neutralizing the patient's refractive error, thereby determining the lens power needed to correct their vision. Retinoscopy is particularly useful in cases where patients cannot accurately communicate their refractive needs, such as young children or individuals with communication challenges. It forms a crucial part of comprehensive eye exams and is essential for prescribing accurate eyeglasses or contact lenses to improve visual acuity and overall eye health.
