Pneumatic retinopexy is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat certain types of retinal detachments. It involves injecting a small gas bubble into the vitreous cavity of the eye, which then floats upwards and presses against the detached area of the retina. The bubble acts as a temporary internal splint, holding the retina in place while a laser or cryotherapy is used to seal the retinal tear or hole.
This procedure is suitable for retinal detachments that are uncomplicated, small in size, and located in the upper part of the eye. It is typically performed in an outpatient setting and does not require general anesthesia. Patients are instructed to maintain a specific head position to ensure the gas bubble remains in the desired position against the detached retina. Over time, the gas bubble is naturally absorbed by the eye, and the retina heals into place. Pneumatic retinopexy can be an effective treatment, offering quicker recovery times compared to more invasive surgical options.
