Pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) is a specialized surgical procedure in ophthalmology used to address various disorders affecting the vitreous and retina. During PPV, small incisions are made in the sclera near the pars plana, situated between the iris and choroid. Through these incisions, surgeons insert instruments like light probes, cutters, and infusion ports into the vitreous cavity.
PPV is employed for conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, macular holes, retinal detachments, vitreous hemorrhage, and epiretinal membranes. The procedure involves removing the vitreous gel to facilitate direct access to the retina for treatment and repair. Post-surgery, the vitreous cavity may be filled with a gas bubble or silicone oil to support retinal stability during recovery. PPV is a precise and advanced technique that significantly improves outcomes for complex retinal diseases.
