Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) is a precise laser eye surgery designed to correct common vision issues like myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. Unlike LASIK, PRK gently removes the outer layer of the cornea (epithelium) to access and reshape the corneal tissue beneath. This reshaping aims to correct the refractive error by precisely sculpting the cornea with a laser.
PRK is suitable for individuals with thinner corneas or those who prefer not to have a corneal flap created, making it a versatile option. Although recovery involves a few days to weeks as the epithelial layer regenerates, many patients achieve significantly improved vision without reliance on glasses or contacts post-surgery.
