Optometry

Optometry

Optometry, a vital field within ophthalmology, centers on primary eye care, encompassing vision assessment, diagnosis, and the management of various eye conditions. Optometrists are essential in identifying vision issues such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and age-related presbyopia, often recommending glasses or contact lenses for correction. Additionally, they are skilled in detecting early signs of eye diseases like glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration, and will refer patients to ophthalmologists for more specialized treatment when needed. Modern optometry benefits from advanced tools such as retinal imaging and optical coherence tomography (OCT), which allow for thorough eye examinations. The work of optometrists is crucial not only for maintaining eye health but also for enhancing overall quality of life, underscoring the significance of regular eye exams in preventive healthcare.
