Ocular Surface Disease

Ocular Surface Disease

Ocular Surface Disease (OSD) encompasses a group of disorders affecting the cornea, conjunctiva, and tear film, leading to discomfort, visual disturbances, and potential damage if untreated. Common conditions under this umbrella include dry eye syndrome, blepharitis, and ocular allergies. Dry eye syndrome, the most prevalent form, results from inadequate tear production or poor tear quality, causing symptoms like itching, burning, and a gritty sensation. Blepharitis involves inflammation of the eyelid margins, often leading to redness, crusting, and irritation. Ocular allergies manifest as itching, redness, and tearing due to hypersensitivity reactions to allergens. Management strategies typically involve artificial tears, lifestyle modifications, and in more severe cases, prescription medications or procedural interventions like punctal plugs to conserve tears. Early diagnosis and tailored treatment are crucial to alleviate symptoms and prevent complications, highlighting the importance of regular eye exams for maintaining ocular health.
