Blepharitis

Blepharitis

Blepharitis, an inflammation of the eyelids, commonly affects eyelash follicles and glands along the eyelid margins. It presents with symptoms like redness, itching, burning sensations, and a gritty feeling in the eyes. There are two primary types: anterior blepharitis, affecting the front of the eyelid near the eyelashes, often caused by bacteria or dandruff, and posterior blepharitis, associated with dysfunction of the eyelid's oil glands, leading to poor tear film quality.

Treatment involves daily eyelid hygiene using warm compresses and gentle cleansing, alongside medications such as antibiotics or steroids in severe cases. Though typically not sight-threatening, untreated blepharitis can result in discomfort and complications like dry eye syndrome or styes. Regular eye exams and adherence to prescribed treatments are crucial for managing symptoms effectively and preventing complications.
