International Ophthalmology Conference

Eyelid

The eyelid, an intricate structure comprising skin, muscle, and connective tissue, serves a pivotal role in protecting the eye. Its primary function is shielding the eye from external elements such as dust, debris, and excessive light. Additionally, eyelids contain meibomian glands that secrete oils to lubricate the eye and maintain tear distribution for optimal moisture and clarity of vision.

In ophthalmology, issues like blepharitis (inflammation), ptosis (drooping), or ectropion (outward turning) can compromise eyelid function, necessitating medical intervention. Ophthalmologists employ various treatments, including medications, surgical procedures, and corrective techniques, to manage these conditions effectively. Understanding the significance of eyelids underscores their crucial role in protecting eye health and maintaining visual acuity.
